Dude. So my fan on my graphics card is all loud and stuff. I try to change it but can't find the right fan. Well, I find the right size but then I gotta mod it to make it fit in the heat sink. Pain in the ass though I guess modding it will help me learn a bit about modding hardware which might be fun. Time to bust out the old Dremel. So now I'm running on my onboard video which is a Geforce 2 MX. The card I had in my slot is a Geforce 3. One generation ahead. Boy, what a difference in display. Refresh on my onboard card is weak. I see fuzzies. Makes me wonder if I should get a new video card all together. I've saved up enough and set enough aside for the necessities and tuition. I think I need a treat. But now I hear about this new PCI bus thing that's gonna take over AGP and make stuff faster and that makes me think if I should wait. But hell, can't keep up with technology so I might as well just splurge. Now the hard part is deciding. Nvidia or ATI? Ah, and there's also S3 which I thought was a shocker. I saw them at the GDC this year pimping out cards again. I thought they were gone. I had an S3 card once. It was the Diamond Stealth 3D 3000. Man, those were the days. Yarg! I can't take the fuzzies!

I hear that the difference between the GeForce 2 MX and GeForce 3 isn't generational. You can equate the MX tag to "cheap". For example, the GeForce 4 MX cards performed worse than the GeForce 3. It was meant as a cheaper solution for those who prefer larger numbers on their labels. (...since nowadays they are all in the thousands. How they made that jump, I have no idea.)
Most people when given a choice nowadays seem to want to go with ATI. nVidia seems to have sold their soul by trading quality for quantity in the OEM and low-end market by cutting corners in their designs, etc. It's the bare-minimum you should have nowadays for 3-D acceleration. Apparently ATI's support has gotten better, and the quality of their cards have remained high. If you can't stand the fuzzies or the low quality now, avoid nVidia.
...I thought nVidia bought out S3? dunno.

I hear your point A sama. I was just at frys trying to pick up a vid card... wanted the radion 9600. Couldn't find one new. Went to two frys too... all preused. Only three copies total. they had a million 9800 and a mess of 9600 se and xt... but not what I wanted. Same story... different product.
I think of nVidia as a good brand name... but wouldn't out right buy it due to the whole "selling of souls".
I'll complain more about it later in my live journal and save our readers from the evil Frys rant :p

Ah, good insight. Hopefully when ATI comes out with their X800 cards then the 9800s will go down. But I might just cave in and get one some time soon. Hmmmm...speaking of which I might also give in and get one of those Sound Blaster Augidy 2 ZS.

Hmmmmm....
I've been looking at Wednesday's comic and I kinda understand it, I guess. You mind on giving some commentary about it Young?
