Word yo! I miss those days when martial arts movies were just a bunch of Asian guys with that funky 70s and 80s hair beating the crap outta people. At least back then most of the action was real. None of this fancy CG stuff. Gotta love the wire work too. I think it's a dying art now. I use to watch a lotta Kung Fu flics. Most of the really bad dubbed ones. But the action was the best. Ok, sometimes the CG stuff looks pretty kewl. Bullet time can be kewl and useful sometimes but I feel it's something that's being over used like the lens flare filter in Photoshop. But if it can be used correctly and effectively, not just thrown in there, then I don't mind it too much.

Here's what REALLY gets me riled.
When I hear of someone watching a kung fu movie for the first time and they're all "Oh! It's just like the Matrix!"
Yeah, since Matrix was partially inspired by movies like that.
I guess I just want to see credit where credit is due.
Usually helps to point out that usually the movie their watching predates Matrix by a few years. ^_~

Here's a funny little parallel to add to this subject. I remember when I first saw the trailer for The Last Samurai, I was all "Tha F*sk?"
First off I'm wondering if, even though it's "just a movie" if there are historians in Japan that take it as sort of an insult. Implying that the last real Samurai in Japan was a white guy. It'd be something along the lines of having a Japanese guy in a movie called "The Last Cowboy."

But on to the story:
Shinji Saijyo, the author/artist of Iron Wok Jan, was asked in an interview by Newtype what he'd consider an ideal story to publish like an American comic would be.

regarding "The Last Samurai". when i saw that trailer, I thought the same thing; however, i think i heard somewhere that they got some kind of consent or might even be working with the Japanese? proof of that? i can't find any; however they seemed to have employed a lot of Japanese actors and filmed on site at a few locations (however, the grassy areas are filmed in New Zealand--prolly because there might not be much of Japan left that looks 19th century).

they also seem to be catering to the Japanese public with the amount of respect they intended to include--since they expect them to be a large portion of the intended audience. they even showed the trailer there first.

so could it be a naming problem that's just so irksome? well, i read that the story is based on a historical period where the country was in major strife over the issue of modernization. the remaining samurai revolted against the government in a losing battle... etc. (read the article in the link above)
However, if you think about it, what is the plural form of "samurai"? "Samurai", right? So they might not be referring to the white guy as *the last individual* samurai, but the mob of samurai revolting who would eventually die or lose their way of life to modernization/westernization.

...but then again, this is Hollywood... ^_^;;

I never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever want to work a wine tasting at work, ever again. I don't wine tastings. I don't get wine. I think wine taste like piss. Red wine tasted like bloody piss. Not that I drink piss but that what I would guess to be the closest taste to wine. So I guess beer would be like carbonated piss, but I won't dis b33r cause I like b33r. But man, I sure do hate wine tastings. If I had a time machine I would go back in time and kill the people who invented wine and make grapes extinct. But then I wouldn't have anymore more chocolate covered rasins to eat. Shoot. I just don't understand that kinda hobby or even passion. I guess it's one of those things people find in life that make them happy and gives them purpose. Just like me and Anime and stuff. Fine, I'll stop ratting about wine tasters and wine tasting. I bet they wonder about Otakus.

After work I was driving home and I was behind this Honda CRV. Nice car but I noticed this little decal that said, "Real Time AWD." I'm like, "WTF?!" How much more real time can all wheel driving get. You either have it or don't. I mean does it mean it wont work in the past or future or after you render all the frames? Is there like a game engine that you have to load in order to load all wheel drive in real time? How's that compared to other all wheel drive vehicles? Does that mean the other vehicles with all wheel drive don't have all wheel drive in the present? So many miss leading phrases for marketing to use. I remember the 3D tooth brush and the 4D tooth brush. How much more 3 dimensional can you get when brushing your teeth? Do 4D tooth brushes allow time travel? Wow! My tooth brush is brushing my teeth sooooooo fast I can travel through time! Heh, 3D, real-time, what else well they use? I bet we'll soon find a T and L toaster with anti-aliasing crust function. Kinda falls in with the "e" and "i" stuff.
