June 6, 2002 - Thursday

Alright, time for a daily anti-virus announcement!

Everyone who's reading this comic (Nekobox) and Megatokyo (http://www.megatokyo.com) please do the following:

Virus scan your computer (Mcfee or Symantec)
Install Eudora (Eudora)
Install Netscape (Netscape or Mozilla)
Install the latest security patches (Microsoft)

*someone* out there who knows me or at least reads Nekobox and Megatokyo is infected with Klez and has been sending me about 4 Klez emails a day.

I'm safe because of three things:
I use a Mac
I use Netscape
I use Eudora

This morning I got a Klez infected email from Largo. This *definitely* narrows down the list to someone who reads Nekobox webcomic or who knows me personally. Either way it means you might see this.**

You are a threat and a menace! Your computer is probably sending out hundreds of infected emails a day! Please fix it!

** NOTE: A Klez infected email from Largo does not mean Largo is infected. Klez is a sneaky bastard that takes advantage of several weaknesses of Microsoft and the internet to wreak it's havoc. An infected machine will scan it's Outlook and IE cache for email addresses to choose it's targets. In this case me *and* Largo. In sending out the email it fakes the sender field, making it a bit harder to track. I got lucky in that this time the fake address was Largo@MT, meaning it's someone who reads both our sites.

In this case there was this tidbit attached to all the Klez emails:
Date-warning: Date header was inserted by mtaout02.icomcast.net

This may mean that whoever is infected is on the @home network.

Another hint is the subject header:
Number is arbitrary but should not be repeated

If this is *your* email, if you wrote it to someone, you are infected and you are spreading the hate!

*** NOTE: More information on Klez and a Klez removal tool at Symantec.

You have been warned! If I find you in person, beware!

Just for the records, I've been getting strange e-mails as well. I use Netscape to open my e-mail, so I don't *think* I'm infected, but I've downloaded Norton Anti-Virus just to be sure, and I'm going to download a patch soon.

Please, check your computers... this is getting really annoying.

Thanks.
