Don't worry about crap like that...
Yeah, maybe you could have saved a few bucks, but like you said, you can afford it and it's no big deal. And maybe you might have had to go out of your way just to get the better deal.
Sometimes it's a just a matter of convenience. Maybe I can get a better price on something at a certain store than if I go to the place around the corner... But if I have to drive 20 miles away to save a couple bucks then screw that! You can think of it as spending a few bucks to save yourself some time.
As for people acting smug and superior about about something so trivial as saving a couple of bucks more than you... well they're just assholes... and maybe they have other issues, so let them have they're silly little moment. <.<
