He may be thinking you are asking, "Would you like to be my boyfriend?" which it sounds like he's not ready for. Then again, he may actually be interested, but on a bus, a rather public place, he's too shy to say yes, so he gets grumpy and gruff and gives you the brush-off. I don't know how you're going to do that, but that would probably help a lot towards getting an honest answer. Do you have his e-mail address? An e-mail is easier to get to him privately.
