Moving scariness
I'm going to be moving into a student hall of residence in a few weeks. Does anyone have any suggestions on anything that might help me fit in or something?

I guess I'm just scared that I won't like the people there, or they won't like me... Or maybe I won't be able to find anyone that I can talk to about things I enjoy.

I've never been the most social person, and to be surrounded by a lot of strange people that I don't know is kind of scary for me... If you have any advice I would love to hear from you guys.

Thanks

Moving into a new place full of strangers is always a nerve-wracking experience. Trust me...I have a lot of experience with this sort of thing.

However, I think you are letting your fears run away with you.

Sure in any group of people, there will people you will get along with and some you won't. That's life...but don't assume that there won't be anybody to talk to.

So...you're admitting you're a little shy. Don't worry about it. You're hardly alone. Now, you don't need to rush into anything, but it's pretty likely that early on your dorm is going to have a "get to know you" party. Those are always a good chance to meet everybody in a low-pressure situation.

Something else to think about: somewhere in your dorm, or the Student Union, there should be a place where clubs and groups can post fliers and announcements. Go and see if there is anything that interests you. If there is, show up and check out the group. You don't have to stay if you don't like it, but at least you've given them a chance (and given them a chance to give you a chance).

Last but not least, wander around your dorm. People usually end up decorating their doors or leaving them open. If you see a group hanging out, say hi. Get to know the people who live around you. Some of them may turn out to be really cool. Sure, some of them are probably jerks, but you won't know who you really should avoid until you meet them.
