Well...at least with the burgeoning DVD market...there is a market for dual-language media, where the original Japanese language track is left intact, and a subtitle is available that more closely tracks the original language. But typically with this sort of format, no footage was actually removed (or *shudder* added).
But...if you happen to be discussing the Broadcast TV market, then I am afraid you are correct in that most often story elements are removed in the interest of making the show more "pallatable" to younger children and, more importantly, advertizers.
Now there are some markets for the more "raw" material. For example, TechTV and Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" block don't bother pulling punches, but they aren't Saturday Morning, by a long shot, either in restrictions (a plus), or in viewership (a big minus).
Will they ever stop? To answer that, follow the money. Simply put, until advertizers sponsor more mature animation, there will continue to be pressure to "dummy down" and "clean up" more mature Japanese titles before they broadcast in the U.S.
On the up-side, there are a few dual-releases of titles, with both a "broadcast" version, and an "uncut" version so that they can capture both the "kiddie" market and the "anime otaku" market at the same time. They are just a bit hard to find.
