| spirited away VS capitalism |
weee! Spirited away just came to Denmark, and that is just such a cool movie! I seriously hope that it will make anime just a little bit more popular in Denmark... but I actually doubt that, I mean, it is only send in specific cinemas in Denmark... IT WON AN OSCAR FOR GODS SAKE! and I have figured out why it doesnt get popular even though it wins prices (and even though the papers think its wonderful and make huge issues)the answer is.... DISNEY! I mean, the way that the animation business works is just so... wrong, how can they just hide such a great movie behind their own typical /"()#&#/)&# ? I think that its... terrible!!! I mean... other Disney movies gets send in ALL cinemas around Denmark... what can be done?

I don't think it's _just_ Disney.

I think it's people in general, honestly. Disney has spent years promoting themselves as a child friendly company that markets films for children to see. The problem isn't necessarily Disney though. They've marketted animated films that way because a large portion of adults think animated material is just 'cartoons for kids'.

So in order to make the best sales, Disney has just catered their sales towards the audience which already exists. It wouldn't make sense for them to try anything else. It'd be like trying to market hamburgers to vegetarians and then blaming McDonalds for not doing a good job with a new chicken sandwich.

I dunno if there is anything you can do, considering you're probably not a marketting executive in an animation company, but if you are, you should try publishing anime ads in more 'regular' audience publications. Things like... newspapers or magazines. Disney only markets to kids because they know adults only think animation is for kids. If the adults opened their eyes, all companies, including Disney, would market animation to a wider audience.
