Birthday
So my birthday was yesterday.

It passed in a great big burst of "blah." Approximately the only thing that happened differently was that I got a graphic novel from the Blade of the Immortal series.

Am I right to feel a little disappointed?

But... but... it's a book, right? Why would you be disappointed for getting a book?

Well, er, it's a book of manga. Those don't last me very long.

And it was the *only* *thing* I *got*.

I suppose it depends on how affluent your friends and family are, whether you are treated differently, and how well known your upcoming birthday was.

Could it be that people are planning something for you at another time?

If you live away from home, your gift may be in the mail.

So, you may end up not even having a reason to be disappointed.

From my own experience, at my age, I've seen enough birthdays come and go, that I rarely make a big deal of it. My own circle of friends is quite small, I don't typically let them know that it is coming up, so while it would be nice for someone to remember, I don't expect anything of them.

If you expect nothing, and get anything, you come out ahead.

So, I don't think you should be resentful, in general, since it doesn't help anybody. But, you should only be disappointed if you had a good reason to believe that your birthday would turn out to be more than it has.

Heh, same thing happened to me. ^_^ My birthday was friday, and I got back a homework from my grader, which consisted of losing half my points for not answering the "why" of a question, even though the question never really asked "why". ^_^

Whee!

Well, let's see... No, I'm not living away from home, where "home" is a family/house on the borderline between middle and upper-middle class, leaning towards the latter. My circle of friends around here is pretty small too, but it was from the one friend that came over that I got the aforementioned book. Beyond that book, my birthday might as well have been any day he came over to hang out.
