Why does staying awake make me tired?

Chiaki
Can't stop falling asleep
I'm usually wide awake, and I'm usually attentive, but I always fall asleep in math. Is there anyway to stop?

Well...the way to stop falling asleep would have to be tailored to why you are falling asleep in the first place.

Is it something about the time of day of the class?
(early in the morning, right after lunch)

Is it something about the room the class is in?
(too warm, too cold)

Is it the class?
(boring teacher, incomprehensible subject, too easy)

If you can determine why you are falling asleep, you are already half way. All you have to do then, is decide how you are going to try and counteract it.

That is about all I can advise at the moment. If you would care to share more, perhaps we can help you find a solution that will work best for you.

I see, it is a boring class right after lunch, so that's probably the reason why. But I'm usually awake (too hyper) no matter how boring things are, and don't feel the least bit sleepy until I enter the classroom and sit down in my seat.

This may be a bit of projecting on my part, but you seem to be the "genki" energetic sort that always seems to be in motion.

Even someone like that, whose just eaten, and is in a class she is not particularly interested in, will find themself more tired than usual, particularly if now she has to sit still. Math is also not the sort of subject to encourage interpretive thinking and discussions that help to keep your mind more active. How you feel about an equasion does not matter in the slightest. Your logic and computation are either correct, or they are not.

Now, I would not suggest you get up in the middle of class for a good stretch. However, I'm sure there are other things that can be done.

On the physical side, one thing to try, is to make yourself a bit colder, since being warmer tends to make people sleepier, while colder can keep you more alert (unless you get so cold hypothermia sets in, but I think we can assume you will not be foolish). Please keep in mind that propriety and modesty are important, so the best I can suggest is to wear layers, and regulate your temperature by wearing more or less of them. Another, is to try to maintain proper posture. Slumping, slouching, and worst, putting your head down, are physical cues to your body that it is time to rest. Much as I hate to sound like a school marm, sit up straight. When you feel like slouching, that is a good sign that you are headed towards being sleepy, so that is when you have to catch yourself and force yourself to be more attentive and alert.

And if you're feeling rather cruel and/or masochistic, you can always sit right in the front seat of the class and force yourself to stay awake lest be spotted napping by the teacher! That's one way to stay awake.

Well I suppose shame could work...however there are more subtle mental tricks you can try first, particularly if you want to learn anything in the class. Sure, you can distract yourself with something else you find interesting, which will keep you awake, but if you are distracted from the class, you likely will not pick up the material very well.

If the book is more interesting (or at least covers the material better) than the teacher, read along, or read ahead. If the book is difficult to understand and the teacher does a better job, concentrate on the teacher. Force yourself to take interest in the material. If there is something you do not understand, rather than get bored, ask questions when appropriate. (You just might find your grades improving, as well.) I will recommend, however, to ask detailed questions about the specific area you would like explained. Few things give teachers more grief than a student announcing, "Mr./Ms. [Teacher's name here]...I don't understand...."

ok, I think I'll force myself to read to the book more. We spend 1 hour of our class on homework anyway, and thanks for the advice!
